Difference between manage tracks and manage routes?

There are 'Manage' entries under the upper button bar for tracks, wpts and routes.
I cannot see any difference in behaviour if choosing 'Tracks' or 'Routes'. In both cases my recorded tracks are displayed but I cannot see any of my stored routes, nor can I manage, e. g. change their properties.
Anyone who can solve this puzzle?
