Howto setup custom style file

I've played arround with Oruxmaps and Mapsforge offline maps. So far it seems rather nice albeit I'd like to change some styles. I've already asked in the Mapsforge group (https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!topic/mapsforge-dev/538jP6fnYFI),downloaded the "osmarender.xml" and put it next to "switzerland.map" as "switzerland.map.xml" into the "oruxmaps/mapfiles" folder. When I now start oruxmaps the "switzerland.map" gets loaded, yet the display turns completely black. So what's wrong?

I think you must change the path to the symbols and patterns files in the *.map.xml file.

Sure? These path should be relative. Beside that wouldn't correct the black screen since most ways don't need a symbol or a pattern.

Yes, pretty sure. It is best to test first the custom schema with the original mapsforge "AdvancedMapViewer".
There you will see a meaningful error message.

Okay. There seems to be no info (http://code.google.com/p/mapsforge/wiki/RenderThemeAPI) about how to setup a test environment. Any help?

Please install the APK from here AdvancedMapViewer.apk

This APK allows you to load Custom Render Theme for the map (with the menu button),
and will show error messages on what is wrong.

I've now downloaded this APK and also downloaded all the patters and symbols and stored them in the same location as the osmarender.xml. Yet neither the standard path nor even the absolute path or whatever I tried worked.

I give up, I've now spend too much time for something which should just work. There's no reason why any error message should appear. A missing pattern or symbol may not be drawn but the rest should work as usual.
