Would it be possible to suppot bluetooth gps devices? I am using a Bluetooth gps logger while hiking. It's far more convenient than to use the phone, because it is small and can be attached to my backpack for optimal gps performance. Also it would save battery on the phone. The logger sends a NMEA-Sequence every second via bluetooth. I used it with my Nokia N73 for years. For symbian there is a lot of software that supports this. I used SmartComGPS for example.

Hi, goldencore.

I also have an external antenna, but I have not tried using it with my android.

I have to study it later. It would be normal that android encapsulates bluetooth gps and provide the signal to applications through its own API, as a GPS more. If so, it would be easy to use external gps.

Hi Jose,

it would be really nice if you could find some time to look into that issue. Thanks for your good work so far!

I don't really understand. If you send a GPS signal every second to the phone, where's the saving? The phone needs to run anyway, and I'm not shure, if Bluetooth uses less battery than GPS reception ...

Hi, Peter;

Bluetooth connection consumes less power than the internal gps. It is a fact that I have proved with some devices.
Anyway, I have found this:

Ok then, to answer your question, no, you cannot use a BT-GPS since
android doesn't implement BT-SPP profile and the GPS functions
wouldn't to know what to do with it even if it was implemented.

I think we must wait until android supports this protocol.

That's a shame. So we just have to wait...

Have you seen this: http://code.google.com/p/android-bluetooth/

Might it be of any use? I don't know enough about the tech to tell.

Hi, goldencore

I think android 2.0 should give more support to Bluetooth protocols, no sense to have a phone with Bluetooth support for hands-free only!!!

This library do not seem to have support for spp protocol. It is still a very young version.

Can you verify that OruxMaps would allow the configuration of an external GPS via Bluetooth, such as the US Globalsat BT-359 see www. usglobalsat. com.

Hi;

I can not.

It should work (it uses nmea 01983 protocol) but I can not confirm that it will work, because I do not have such gps device.
